  Chillers & Close Control

A chilling picture

Axair Climate is encouraging end users and specifiers to take a closer look at the whole life costs of chillers, as Mike Slattery/Rob Rhodes explains

In any building where chilled water is used for air conditioning or process cooling, the chillers will inevitably make a significant contribution to the building’s energy consumption. Yet, all too often, large items of building services plant such as chillers are selected on the basis of capital cost and co-efficient of performance (COP) at maximum load.

A far more meaningful approach is to consider the whole life costs of such items – something that everyone agrees to in principle but many don’t adhere to.
How the chiller(s) are controlled is also important. Not just in terms of when each chiller is operating but also when the chillers are switched on and off. Getting this right requires an in-depth understanding of how each chiller is operating and where the maximum efficiencies are. Armed with the right information and expertise, even a chiller plant that is already connected to a BMS can be optimised to bring significant improvements in performance.

Axair Climate has many years experience in configuring multiple chiller installations to provide optimum performance and we are very happy to work with specifiers on this aspect of the project.
